No-one is forcing you to do anything
Kernel 2.6 is close to release. Maintainers confident it is
well tested (we'll see:-). Once released most new features
to go into 2.6 (or 2.7), 2.4 put into maintenance/security
mode.

No-one is forcing you to move to 2.6. Full source code for
previous versions is available to modify if you like. In fact
you could even use 2.2 (many still do).

If you want the latest features you'll have to port those
changes back to your preferred kernel version, this might
not always be possible because of the size and number of
changes required. These changes might also make a stable
kernel (e.g. 2.4) unstable!

Freedom doesn't mean everyone do as I wish.
