- Make kernel patches
- If you can't make an official entry into kernel of your choice, then make it un-official. Many a vendor develop their software/extensions as patches to the kernel. Moving on to a new kernel is not a bad idea as long as you are not required to change/upgrade your base OS distro or a whole slew of other stuff that you already have installed (aka MS style). i.e upgrade to kernel-2.6 on my RH7.3 machine.
