All software should be free because proprietary software means giving power to the writer. That's a simple condensed version.

One thing that stimulates innovation is a reward. If you write software for nothing is fine if you choose that but when forced to write it for nothing or not write then many will not write software. That slows innovation.

At the same time the copyright and patent laws of today also slow innovation because they are outdated. The IT industry moves much quicker than those laws were meant to regulate.

Software written as an opensource model today increases innovation. Pressure by Linux for example spurs companies like Microsoft to innovate or at least look for innovation they can buy and bring to market.

Stallman's vision would not do that. It would not mean no innovation just slower innovation.
