You *definitely* don't speak for all Linux hackers.

People will take a proprietary driver over no driver at all. (NVidia graphics cards, anyone?) Which isn't to say that proprietary drivers can't be very frustrating at times, and that an open-source driver wouldn't take some of the burden of maintaining the Centrino driver off of Intel.
