That was a very good link to a respectable bit of analysis, but my impression was rather different. No KDE support (hence losing 50-60% of Linux software), a bug in the network handling that needs a kernal recompile to fix, and a bunch of slow Java apps that don't even agree on what a user interface should look like.
I think I see the reason for the price cut now. The techies won't like this, so appeal to the bean-counters.
If this is Sun trying to embrace and extend Linux, it looks like a pretty desparate play to me. This isn't even good against other Linux offerings (and far below Apple), let alone MS.
As so often the UI shots look _exactly_ like Windows XP. Come on guys; you won't beat MS by imitation, which is well known as the sincerest form of flattery. Looking like Windows just tells everyone you're only playing catch-up.
If this distro gets adopted (ho ho), MS will have moved on with Longhorn and this will probably look really old fashioned.
The great opportunity for Open Source and Linux _should_ be to break the mould and do something exciting and different in the UI.
But perhaps that vision has been lost
