I Don't Think MS Cares
Just my theory here but I think Microsoft is going Milk the Office Cash cow for as much as it can and let go.

With Open Office getting better and better I figure in few years Microsoft Office will be worthless. Microsoft I bet knows this too.

Microsoft can sell server services for Office Suite functionality. They can use a product like Open Office by adding the hooks to make it work with their server products. Then everyone can have a free Office product that connect with a license of course to a back end server.

Effectively they reduces development costs while just transfering the licensing and maintaining profits.

Just my theory there. It might not happen or maybe it will. Who knows except for Microsoft.
