Can Novell Compete? Sure -- but WILL they?

Novell is in an ideal position to compete in the server space -- but with whom?

In the Server space, Novell has a much longer track record than Red Hat -- and, aside from NetWare, Novell has something that Red Hat does not -- they own all the Intellectual Property rights to Unix SVR4 that they need to weather a Linux defeat in the courts over SVR4 copyright infringement. Score one for Novell.

The real threat to Novell will come from Sun -- the only vendor whose SVR4 rights cannot be challenged. Score one for Sun.

In the end, if SCO prevails against Linux in the courts (admittedly, a long shot) Red Hat goes down, SCO lives another day, and Novell and Sun share the spoils (or not) in the mid-range server marketplace. Score one for SCO -- whose days are numbered, no matter what the outcome!

If their challenge to Linux goes nowhere, SCO fades away and Novell had to compete with both Sun and Red Hat. In this scenario, Sun still has the upper hand since they have a relationship with Microsoft which precludes their being sued for infringement of Microsoft IP. Score two for Microsoft.

For now, Red Hat is in Microsoft's crosshairs but Novell might not be far behind.
