The great thing about OES is that ...
... companies can deploy a Novell OES (SUSE) Linux server into a Novell, Microsoft or UNIX/Linux LAN and the PCs can use it without even being reconfigured. User authentication, permissions, security all integrate. In the case of a NetWare LAN, even legacy NetWare system admin utilities for DOS and Windows can be used to do things with your new Linux server. (for instance, granting or revoking rights to files and folders on the server. I often do this with a DOS batch file with thousands of lines, using the rights.exe utility.)

Any other method of switching to a new type of server requires an actual "rollout plan", where you have to go talk to all the departments and find out who is using software or utilities that won't work on the new system. Also you would generally need to create a second non-synchronized set of usernames, passwords, user groups and file system security that would all be separately administered. That's horribly nasty. It's error-prone, it annoys your users, and generates tons of helpdesk calls.

This way, there's no big rush to take your old servers out of the picture. And seriously, if they're reliable and secure, you don't need to anyway. So, you can focus on the two things that are worthwhile: 1)making new Linux-based services available and 2)if replacing existing functionality, you can bulletproof one network service at a time. If you do it carefully with sufficient testing, your users will simply continue to work uninterrupted.

So yeah, I'm stoked about OES. Can't wait till it's released!
