Longhorn Build 4074
Avalon uses vector graphics and mark up all the way, so everything is fully scaleable and so is independent of screen resolution - An A4 page in MSWord will actually be a A4 page and so on. They are releasing Avalon for XP and server 2003 to let application that use this new vector and mark up stuff to be run on these platforms. The full benefits are considerably more and are only possible on the longhorn architecture. This is probably the first time they really give all the benefits to the earlier platforms because win32 and Avalon are completely different and are incompatible.

If you had a look at the 4074 build of Longhorn, and also had a look at some of the screenshots floating around (the SS that have all the eye candy switched on are quite hard to come by though), you would see that Avalon will bring Windows into (and beyond in a few areas) the 21 century by using the power of modern graphics cards to render all the graphics, removing the load from the CPU. This has many benefits, but the hardware required doesn't have to be as great as some of the rumours flying around have suggested. I've seen the Desktop Window Manager running great on a 32MB GeForce4, which is below standard now.
