..Apache is a catchup project?...

It's a web server.
There are lots solutions for serving up web pages. Apache is only one and certainly wasn't the first.

..Bind, FTP, SSH....

They run the Internet alright and are excepted standards. If this is the winner for you in the OSS Vs proprietary debate then so be it.

..Much is original, innovative and true to the original goals of open development where cool stuff was made and cool stuff was shared....

Fine. Show me the innovative original technology that proprietary vendors missed first.
Othrwise just flowery sales language with no substance.

..Volunteers generally choose to give their efforts away because they enjoy their work and want to share....

Now put them up against people with the same passion but get paid for it too. That's me.

I will if you clarify what 'facing instead' means and also, George can say what he wants but that doesn't make it factual, even if you agree with it.
