...but most don't do it for free
..People actually WANT to be able to play with the code....

Who does? Students? I'm sorry but most people get binaries, install and use.

..that is why free software with its unique open and public codebase and a global army of public, government and corporate contributors all sharing code dynamically over the worldwide web will eventually outrun and bury closed source proprietary software....

We'll see about this rosey picture.
I'm not saying OSS doesn't have its place but there will always be a premium on the 'better mousetrap' and so proprietary ain't going away. OSS projects by their nature are replication of existing apps and technology and so are catchup products.

..companies will open their IP portfolios to free software just like IBM has..

You could get a job in the Bush Propaganda ministery.
100 out of 10000 patents? DB2 is open source and patent free? Me thinks not.

..A SLAVE is one who is FORCED to contribute....
..A VOLUNTEER is one who contributes WILLINGLY and WITH JOY ...

Is this Newspeak?
The 'slave' is paid?
Uncompensated labor sets you free?
When there are open source mortgages and grocery stores where uncompensated farmers stock the shelves with their produce, just for the sheer joy, only then will I agree.

..And that is something lots of people just haven't figured out yet..

To be honest I don't know if people will ever figure out this 'world according to George'.
After all, if it looks to good to be true then it probably is.

Joe
