Lots of people ENJOY developing software for fun ...
After all, thats how the PC got its birth. People actually WANT to be able to play with the code. Microsoft must be agonizing over this issue. They have to PAY for all of their developers AND they miss out on a lot of good ideas and great expertise. Why? Because they are so concerned that their contributors get paid? Are you kidding? The ONLY reason that Microsoft does not accept outside contributions is precisely that it would require them to OPEN their Windows codebase to make it happen. That is the albatross around the neck of a closed source codebase, and that is why free software with its unique open and public codebase and a global army of public, government and corporate contributors all sharing code dynamically over the worldwide web will eventually outrun and bury closed source proprietary software. Major companies will open their IP portfolios to free software just like IBM has because free software will not be seen as a competitive threat. Closed source companies will stand alone with their limited pool of talent and IP and will not be able to compete with this emerging giant. A SLAVE is one who is FORCED to contribute. A VOLUNTEER is one who contributes WILLINGLY and WITH JOY out of a commitment to a vision. And that is something lots of people just haven't figured out yet..
