Might want to notice what RedHat is doing.
They split their product into paid and unpaid. They lure volunteers to improve the free product, with every expectation that they will use the contribution to increase the value of their paid product. Their paid product costs a lot.

You're looking at the exploitation of volunteer labor to make money. Notice?

What's the alternative? Hire programmers to improve RHEL. Pay salaries. Employ people.
That sounds like a great idea to me.
