- I Think It is A Good Thing
- I like IBM's participation in Java and in Linux. It has accelerated the advance. However, I have been burned by IBM's Visual Age for Java, OS/2 and Visual Age for C++. I am now very comfortable when IBM owns the technology that is crucial to my companies success. We are a user of Sun One Sudio 4 on Linux and would probably switch to NetBeans before switching to Eclipse. So, we are glad to hear that Sun is going to continue with the NetBeans/Studio One product. Our position has nothing to do with technology but everything to do with product longevity. Despite the "problems" with Sun the development environments have always been supported for years and we have not experienced that with IBM. Look at the rapid amount of change to DB2 and/or UDB. The NetBeans environment has been in use for several years and we have not found a limitation to the product. For a small developer changing development tools and learning curves cause schedule slips. The scar tissue gets itchy when we think on the major role IBM is playing in Eclipse.
