RIAA is on the slippery slope
The RIAA used the threats of civil court actions and the publicity surrounding the threats to FUD the consumers in the early going. But quite a few of the actions are going to court and the RIAA faces some pretty doubtful conclusions there. If/when they lose a lot of these suits based on their lack of merit and the exclusions allowed by the No Electronic Theft Act that amended the copyright laws in 1997, all the sting will go out of the threats and consumers, armed with a virtual license to download their 2000 tracks per year will doubtless be able to take advantage of P2P systems and client software far easier and safer to use than the current crop.

The lawsuits against the common man were a bold move by the RIAA, but history will show them to be an incredibly stupid move that put suppliers into an adversarial role vis-a-vis their consumers.
