No, I think Microsoft's 'slide' would have occurred no matter what, especially in emerging markets (I think a lot of them might disagree with being called '3rd world'). It's a combination of ubiquity and complacence -- it happens to all dominant companies eventually. IBM even experienced it, but was able to recover by redefining itself while remaining true to its core. Microsoft should closely study IBM's history since the anti-trust trials to see how IBM did it.
