Things have changed since the days of Mao, when China could legitimately be called, well, Maoist (a flavor of socialism and/or communism).

Since the days of Deng, however, the economy has become highly entrepreneural and (aside from some old heavy industries still creaking along) recognizably capitalist.

The "socialism" that still remains is merely a repressive, one-party government of octogenarian men trying either to (a) hold on to power at all costs, or (b) maintain stability and avoid a USSR-style meltdown ... depending on whom you choose to believe.
