OpenOffice readiness
Major progress is being made as we speak with improvements to OpenOffice. You've heard about all those foreign governments (civic, state and federal) that are switching their desktops from MSWindows/MSOffice to Linux? Civic governments here in Canada are doing it too. Guess what - almost all of them are going with OpenOffice, and a few with its Sun cousin, StarOffice. Many of the complaints have been from accountants who have learned to push Excel very, very hard. OpenOffice is going to deliver the functions they need.

Probably most of the effort right now is devoted to the Linux version, but you can bet that the same improvements will be in the Windows and Mac versions as soon as they're fully tested. They've commited to cross-platform compatibility.

It's great news for me because I plan to switch all the Intel boxes in our company to Linux, and will probably acquire a few Macs for our graphics people. The ability to run OpenOffice on Mac, Linux, and Windows will be key to retaining document compatibility.

I just wish I could get AutoCAD for Linux. Those drafting people can't imagine a world without it.
