It looks like this new Pages program is more like an answer to
MS Publisher - a low end page layout program not available for
Mac.

Maybe you could call it a high end word processor - whatever.

Interestingly, it seems to have features that Appleworks has had
for years but people did not know about. The draw program in
AW allowed for multipage docs, text frame linking, some type
controls, etc. I'm guessing that this new Pages app adds some
more features - preferably more type controls.

Appleworks also had a presentaion feature years ago - called
slideshow. Again few knew of it and Apple didn't do much to
push it.

This new iWork is not a competitor to either Office or MS Works.
It does not include a spreadsheet, or database function. You
still have Appleworks for that. Appleworks is much more
powerful than many realize. They really don't look under the
hood of this thing and nobody ever read the "how to" books that
came with apps in the past.
