iWork is more like MS Works
I doubt if iWorks was designed to go up against MS Office/Mac. It replaces Appleworks which included a spreadsheet program that could read/write xls files.

It's more along the lines of MS Works which includes MS Word and a few other programs (including a spreadsheet that isn't compatible with anything).

It's greatest value will be another $79 from new Mac buyers. At least those that aren't willing to lie to the sales person so they can get MS Office/Mac student edition for $149.
