I think you make my point.
Yes, services is hot right now, just as it has been in the past. We can look at almost any "invention" and it follows the same progression from difficult to use and requires "service" to being highly dependable and self sustaining.

I know the car analogy gets old but it's a great example. They were very complicated and few even had an inkling what an internal combustion engine was, much less how to keep it in top order. The rest of the car was just as big a mystery. They required lots of service and a high level of knowledge to operate. As their level of sophistication rose, the need for service and a deep understanding of them dropped. I bet not 1 out of 100 mechanics really understands the ECM (computer) in the average car today. No need of it.

TV, Telephone, heck even radio went through the same process. Everything does, and it does so because in the long run, that really is what people want. Maybe it just goes against human nature to be that dependant on others?

The fact we are talking about computers makes little difference. Well, that isn't true really, the computer industry is moving at several magnitudes the speed of any of those technologies. 50 Years of automotive evolution is maybe 5 years in the computer industry.

To be gracious, lets say it's ten years. That means a company started today will be looking at some hard time as the technology rolls out. You have to know that is what many are working on. Everyday brings us a new management tool or system from every sort of vendor. To think they will never get it right is being short sighted. Never underestimate the value of ease of use. It's what every human ultimately seeks.
