Other companies are attempting to make a profit on open source directly. Most obviously, they are adding proprietary aspects.

Which companies did you have in mind? Red Hat? Novell?

To date every byte of software that Red Hat has created has been complete with source per the GPL. Novell has been converting software from purchased companies (SuSE, Ximian) from closed to open source.

I think Mr. Stallman would not approve. Companies making money can hire employees and pay them reasonably good salaries. That's a violation of everything open source stands for, the dashing of his fondest hopes.

Which "fondest hopes" are you imagining? RMS has no objections to programmers getting paid by their employers. Rather the opposite, actually -- he just thinks that "secret source" is bad social policy. Sort of like "secret science."
