Services never really were aimed at the desktop
With the exception of security software, which is now more of a yearly service nowadays than an actual product, individual PC owners, and even most business PC owners never use PC services, except what the OEMs provide and even only then if something breaks within the first year. Even businesses that have only simple file/print servers won't want to pay expensive service contracts when they are so easy to maintain and it's cheaper to pay someone a one time fee on the rare occation that something does break beyond repair.

Services do make sense for networked aplications, whether it's LAMP or Java or .Net or what have you. Most companies (especially smaller ones) won't want a full time IT staff to run a web site or maintain a distributed application when they don't need 24/7 maintenance. It's cheaper in the long haul to outsource that. But if you look around, there is PLENTY of business opportunity for services in that area, and I don't see that going away anytime soon.
