Vanishing services market
What does Unix have to do with it? The IT services business is hot, and the hottest part is selling services for Microsoft systems. Example: Dell (of all companies) is now making major moves into IT services. They won't touch Unix, Linux, or Apple though: they're strictly 100% Microsoft.

Services address the need to manage complexity. That old S-36 was complex because it was made up of a slew of individually-replacable parts; the generic PC is not complex because it consists of a use-it-until-it-breaks-then-throw-it-away box.

Precious few networks aren't composed of individually-maintained components, so they're going to be complex for quite a while.
