Novell should be just as big a concern to Sun
After all, Novell has not only has SuSE, but Mono as well, which not only directly competes with .Net but Java as well. And Novell will surely be aggressive in promoting and supporting Mono.

I mean Evolution and the Ximian Desktop are nice, but as you said, Linux desktop front is not ripe, plus there are plenty of good alternatives to those (I still prefer KDE/QT desktop apps myself). So it's pretty obvious that Novell bought out Ximian to get their hands on Mono.
