Let's clear up some misconceptions here about MS MC
The ONLY reason that MS has sold this many units of Media Center is because the consumer chooses what is available at the time and place of purchase. Salespeople are not informed enough or do not want to point out the different configurations out there.

FIRST I am not a tech, don't pretend to be and DO NOT want to be a tech.

Now that is off my chest, when I visit with friends that have bought new peecees I hear compalints that there is too much junk programs they do not use. Almost without exception when I check the box it is Windows Media Center peecee. I ask why they bought that version and they tell me, "Well that is what came with it." I ask them if the genius saleperson they dealt with explained to them what it was they were buying or what their options might be and the answer is always no.

In Microsoft's defense (cough cough hack, I can't believe that slipped out) most consumers have no idea what the heck they are buying or the differences in OEM softwares that they are offered. Most consumers want a peecee to surf the web, send/receive email, play simple online games and maybe do some recording and Windows Media machines are overkill(if you can call it that)for those purposes.
