Adam Smith's views came from a world of small tradesmen, as Thomas Jefferson's came from a world of yeoman farmers.

Those with enough resources can not only game the economic system, they can sometimes game the government.

By the way, my reference to the "common good" had nothing to do with philanthropy. The improvements Smith was talking about were economic.
As we know, jobs having to do with the good of the public are the lowest paying. Well, there are some other jobs that attract dedicated and intelligent and educated people because they're intrinsically enjoyable. Those don't pay well either.
