Why reinvent the wheel?
It's odd that Sun all of a sudden has awoken to the realization that they need to have a slick ide to compete. It's good there getting to work on such a tool.

However, there are tools out there already which do what need. Why build it? While Eclipse seems, from what i understand, to be associated with ibm; Borland's JBuilder is not necessarily associated with a competitor and Borland has worked closely with Sun in the past.

In fact, they even worked on the Java Beans spec with Sun back in (95/96?), so why not partner with them and use JBuilder?

JBuilder has a form designer with property/object inspector just like VB and Delphi do. So, a VB developer would be pretty comfortable with it.

Borland has demonstrated that JBuilder can run on any platform. The IDE itself is one executable, which can run on a variety of platforms. It looks great on a Mac too! and I read somewhere that Gosling himself uses Macs for java work.

JBuilder Entreprise can be a bit daunting for a beginning developer, but it could be massaged and simplified some... maybe add some more 'beginner' type wizards (and there are already quite a few wizards in the product) would result in a ide, which sun could use to compete.

JBuilder is very mature, it's already been a success for years in the industry, the code has been tested and Borland knows how to write java tools to work with the various java technologies.

Plus, it has an open architecture - plug-ins, which are written in java to extend and enhance the ide.

It also hooks into version control and too many other things to mention here. Plus, it has uml modelling tools - perfect for students to design applications and then generate the code - or write the code and see the uml it represents. Great learning tool too.

so why reinvent the wheel? license the techonology or buy it from Borland if they'll deal with sun .

sincerely,
John
