Its a . . .FAKE!
But really folks . . . When you want to download and use some non-distro Linux product (such as stuff from sourceforge.net), you may need to compile stuff. Probably about 30% of the time (from what I have been seeing myself), you will need to compile (some projects don't release RPMs - and of course those DEBIAN hacks have their own "superior" package format).

That "breaking" phenominon is what drives a lot of OSS development! The GNOME stuff (gtk 1.2 -> gtk 2.x) separates out the libraries and include files so that you can use either "track". Of course the ripple effects are that developers need to change their coding habits (i.e. not just ONE gtk library to link to)! I'm not really sure if there has been a concensus on this yet - but OSS keeps evolving, and previous "arbitrary" choices have been institutionalized into standards.

Another way to keep apps from breaking is to NOT use libraries! So-called "static" programs include the library in the binary. It takes up more space, but and extra 2Gb for all static programs in a distro ain't much on a 300Gb drive . . . This is the reasoning behind IBM's AIX - NO shared libraries.
