Linux is a different animal ...
Some of us have faced these issues before with Linux only to have them successfully resolved. BUT, the big issue with Linux is that it is far less forgiving going forward that Windows. Often the latest Linux applications will not work on older Linux installs due to library and feature issues. Linux kernel changes generally do not take into account backward compatibility. They are always reinventing the wheel and leaving compatibility issues to others.

But this is not at all as bad as it sounds. Since Linux is free software, it is very affordable to upgrade the system when necessary, in order to support the latest apps.

AND, since older libraries tend to hang around for years, and voluteers simply recompile and distribute the old source code to work with the latest releases, if you have an old application like the old StarOffice that you cherish, you can simply install the old libraries alongside the new ones, and presto! Both your oldest and your newest applications will work fine. I have an old Wordperfect 8 product, and I only once had a problem with it on the latest Linux version. I and a number of other users complained loudly, and it got fixed through compatibility software that you can choose to run or not run and I have never had a problem with my old WordPerfect since. Of course it does not support the latest features, it is the same crude product it was when it came out. But it runs without a hitch.
