Maybe because of what you said???
>>>I have a question about the last point. Does the GPL provide any avenues for accountability in the event that GPL'd software breaks something? What is a business's recourse?<<<

Perhaps you were responding but you fashioned your response in the form of a question and your question was "Does the GPL provide any avenues for accountability" and "the event that GPL'd software breaks something?" Your response appeared to be fair game so I accepted the challenge. I was responding to your question.

Chad simply made a comparison of the MS EULA and the GPL.

That could be it. You think?

The rest I threw in because it logically fits into the discussion over what responsiblilty free MS software accepts vs responsibility free GPL'd software accepts and why would anyone a)use free software instead of proprietary (and supported version) in critical business apps and b)why would anyone expect free software to provide support when most software you pay for provides no support beyond installation.

You can get both free and proprietary versions of software for Linux. MySQL comes to mind. You have a choice of licenses and support options.

The point being that MS does not stand alone in supported software. There are plenty of supported apps that run on Linux as well so don't compare free GPL'd software to proprietary apps and expect to see the same list of support options. Common sense will tell you they won't be equal. If you must compare then compare the proprietary versions of both or the supported GPL'd version with proprietary versions. Either way, support is always a premium. Nobody gives extended support for nothing. Using Linux apps != no support. You get what you pay for. Its just that Linux apps are usually a better bargain (no network client fees or per install fees). This is my opinion. It is based on spending 10 years supporting MS as network admin, complete with MCP, MCSE+I, MS SQL Database support and implementation along with a few other useless letters associated with MS I no longer use.

I now spend my days as a legal professional. It is much more interesting and exciting.
