I dont think so
Is this the end for Linux? No way. Linux is the favoured OS in Asia including China and is gaining fast in Europe. Even in America it is catching on in phones, appliances, servers and other smart products.

The thing is that it is free and you can view and change all the source code with no cost and no permission.

MS cannot compete with this. You will always have to pay a MS tax when using MS products, it's pure and simple. MS is costly and always will be.

History shows us that cost is a major drawcard for any product, technology and standard.

I personally wouldn't touch a MS product is there was a worthy open source alternative. Why? because I am not interested in giving a billion dollar company more money when I do not need to.

I buy things when I have to, not because I like giving money to Monopolies.

Oh and as far as this being a brilliant move. Um I think that MS is just responding to a movement that is fast gaining ground. Copying something is not brilliant, it is a desperate move and imatation is the best compliment. Although I have to say that their copying cloning ways still fall short of what Open Source offers.

Put yourself in ... say Sony's shoes. Would you pay M$ to use their OS in your TVs and other devices or would you prefer to use Linux. Well Sony at least is using Linux and so would I.

Again I am not into paying for something that I can get for free elsewhere.
