"While many posters will surly claim no one will buy these licenses they are only kidding themselve's. Developers and application software companies will be all over it. With one big exception of course and that is open source."
Not entirely true. In case you've been under a rock, M$ doesn't steer the industry anymore. Of course there'll be companies that license M$'s half-ass stuff. They have just become too ubiquitous. But it definitely won't be "everyone". As time goes on Microsoft will become more and more just a PART of the industry and not its "leader". Does open source license Windows? Oh, that's right--they have linux. Do they license Windows media player? No, they have mplayer. Do they license sql server, 2003 server, windows messenger, word, excel, etc? No, they have THEIR OWN equivalents. Whatever Microsoft is trying to sell, OSS will simply create for its own, without absurd needless licenses, eulas, restrictions, spyware, etc. This is what has been happening and is what is bringing M$ to its knees. M$ is looking to control the industry with its IP, but the industry, and the world as well, will no longer be beholden to one vendor. Especially when they have been so criminal, condescending, uncaring, unimaginative, and overwhelmingly abusive.
"As we all know, open source hasn't any funds to do so.."
We all don't know that. Open source has a lot of funding. Unfortunately I guess for them, their funding isn't comprised mainly of dirty money.
"As developers move to take advantage of the licensed IP the open source community will simply be left out in the cold."
Really? So what's to become of all the governments and companies that are going linux? America's going to tell them they can't communicate because Microsoft needs to feed their greed and desire to control everything? THis will really be quite laughable.
"This is a very smart move on MS's part in their competition with Open SOurce. It will interesting to see how the "community" responds, or if they even try to respond."
Oh, so now that M$ is going to take their competitiveness away from producing better software to hijacking the industry with big money, fancy laws, and possible lawsuits, now this kind of behavior is OK? Weren't Sun and all the others considered laughable when they tried to "compete through the courts"? But now that M$ will do the same suddenly it's very shrewd?...
In case you haven't noticed, the community has been responding for YEARS. Notice how linux is already spoiling M$'s chance to get into the data center? I hate to burst yer bubble, but if M$ continues at their pace, they are going to lose a lot more than they attempted to steal.. - Posted by: GRindinAxTaRupy Posted on: 12/02/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
