Patents need not stop work on a project...

... so long as the idea can make a profit over the licensing fees to be paid and the costs of the project itself (and manufacturing, distribution, and marketing, if applicable.)

Your first point was:
99% of engineering effort [is] going to avoiding
patents.

If the engineers somewhere refuse to work on projects involving payments for licenses, maybe their employer needs to consider hiring less philosophically rigid engineers.
After all, the goal is to make a profit, and not to shun patents.


Your second point:
Development just becomes too expensive to
bother.

It can happen that the potential profits are not large enough to justify the project. Disappointing, but it is possible to work on something else.
And in many cases licensing fees can be avoided by an IP exchange. Nothing the matter with that, if it happens.


Your third point was a list of poor patents to mock the idea that a patent might be the result of years of effort. Obviously, some patents deserve to exist. To argue the contrary, you'd have to assert there has never been a true patent. That's an unacceptable assertion to me.
