Patents don't hold back innovation...
... they assure that you're paid. Would you want to work for years on an idea, and then give it away?

Eventually companies with the resources to obtain patents and assure compensation for IP gain control of innovation. And their view of innovation is incremental, assuming each of the steps produces new sales. So the pace of change is slower.

But in a field like software where innovation is becoming more and more difficult, the markets are only keeping up with reality. We're looking at improvements, and not whole new areas brought to the computer. The spreadsheet, for example, already exists, so adding to what a spreadsheet can do is incremental.

Eventually, even improvements in what software can do will become insubstantial. Then innovation will have to break out somewhere else.

This has happened in a lot of fields, through centuries. We'll be better able to face your aliens as time passes.

Favorite moments in movie computing:
A missile has already been launched when James Bond picks up a manual, speed-reads it, sits down at a console and saves the world by diverting its path. A manual that clear and complte is a miracle.
A few fast programming entries save the world by blowing up the mother ship.

The villains' security experts are going to be roasted when the bad guys regroup.

When your opportunity comes, I'm sure you'll be ready.
