because contrary to your belief it holds back innovation
Surprisingly I'm not in favour of stagnation.
I'm also not in favour of formerly proud
engineering companies spending 99% of development
time trying to avoid patents and not actually
designing.
In this case, as you should know, they just give
up, and join patent exchanging schemes, and,
counter to your beliefs, no one ends up bothering
to design anything and bring it to market because
it is too much effort.
Extrapolate this over a couple of centuries, and
the human race is gone.
You should not underestimate the need within
society for the engineer. Tie his hands, and
you'll pay ten-thousand-fold when an enemy
attacks.
