Let me expand on this part of my argument a little.

A meeting is not actually between people, Fred and Bob. It is between two 'identifiers'. e.g. a telephone meeting is between 0123456789 & 0981726354, an IM meeting is between Fred827 and Bob19827, a face to face meeting is between Fred in Office 826 and Bob in office 777.
i.e. an identifier in the 'meeting method'.

It's never between fred@... and bob@.... because email isn't used for meetings, its just currently used as a way of getting the *actual* identifier that will be used for the meeting. e.g. to exchange conference call details, pass IM screen names etc.

Again this points to the bad fit between email and meetings and hence the bad fit between groupware calendar and email.
