It's about time...
I'm no big fan of Microsoft, as anyone who follows my posts
would know. The one exception though is MS Entourage and
Outlook. The calendar with it's ability to be shared and viewed
by other people, the meeting maker, the ease of setting up
various levels of permission for email and calendar are very
good features. The integration is very well implemented
amongst the e-mail, address book and calendar. This is one of
the very few products Microsoft has shown some innovation.

My gripe with this product of course is, the price. Exchange
server is expensive and only runs on Windows based iron. Then
the yearly per seat license charge prohibits the vast majority of
small businesses from benefiting from this package due to the
high cost. I've been wondering when this great vast community
of open source developers was going to get around to
developing something that could actually compete with the
Exchange Server/Outlook/Entourage package.

If they can incorporate all the benefits Microsoft now provides
with its Exchange package, then Microsoft will be at risk of
loosing a major cash cow. Make it easy to set up at both the
server and client end, make it run on Windows, Macintosh, Linux
and UNIX, and you'll have a huge winner. Small businesses will
benefit because they'll finally have an affordable alternative to
the limits provided by basic e-mail. Enterprise will benefit by the
millions of dollars they'll save. Microsoft will suffer for being to
greedy, which is the reason this initiative is moving forward in
the first place. Man, I love competition. It's about time!
