SCO isn't the genius here.
Microsoft is. They temporarily pretended that SCO was their ally, while they used SCO to spread FUD about Linux. Now that they can't get anything more out of SCO, they're cutting off their support and leaving the company to die. Microsoft lured SCO into letting them take control, and now SCO is suffering the consequences.

Now THAT'S an ingenious plan. Of course this is still speculation, but it all looks pretty clear to me.
