Not surprising ...
I suspect that we will see most of the world reject the concept of software patents, since most of the world has much to lose and little to gain from them. With most of the world rejecting them, it will be difficult for the US and Japan to sustain them. They will simply cause constant trade friction and it is likely that eventually the US and Japan will simply drop them in pursuit of more important issues. When you are dealing with hot topics like terrorism and trade balances, software patents will pale out of favor fast.
