Yes, great comment, many are using Excel features for final data analysis
I think that companies should be offering better data analysis tools to extract and analyze data so these extraction and analysis templates can be stored centrally for others to access and use. The problem with using Excel is that each user is often developing and using their own macros etc, to generate reports. When that employee quits, all of this is lost. Sure you could spend months going through the users hard drive and trying to figure out how to make his/her macros work, but it would probably be easier to start over.

Well, that said, many employees are not given the tools that they need and are forced to use Excel for things it is not suited. The worst thing is that you create islands of data analysis and automation that people do not share. This same sort of thing will happen with OpenOffice as well.
