Good thing

(resource website for finding RFID stuff)

This is definitely a good thing. While there is a chance to bypass a patent with a possible new novel method, more research will be funded and more money for work on RFID testing and implementation will be allocated.
RFID (with respect to the Supply Chain initiatives) is a great new emerging industry. It has been so small for so long and now is finally poised to take off. This will defintely create jobs in the US as much of the technolgy is very "hands on" for the IT and tech aspects of implementation. Unlike standard IT where the job can be done over the phone, RFID requires you to go out and survey the area, the products being tagged and diagnose a lot of RF issues. Extremely hands on and I just don't see that changing. Great benefits from it but it is fussy and needs to have a staff. No fire and forget for the next 5 to 10 years. It will get more robust but companies are going to have move back out of the brain dead, autopilot methods of back end supply chain work they have gotten used to. Can't outsource it to India as the each distribution center has unique RF challenges. And this is a crate, box, pallet tracking technology so we get to figure out the best way to balance RFID with privacy before item level tracking gets going in 3 to 5 years.
