Linux is making the same mistake
Linux vendors are making the same mistake that Windows did. Linux is trying to be everything to everyone.

Windows proved that being both the desktop and Server, and management, and everything else just doesn't work well. It works, kind of.

It seems Linux vendors are so set on displacing Microsoft that they are making the same mistakes. Put it on the servers and desktops. Now vendors are trying to build management systems for desktops, etc. Just antother OS trying to displace Windows.

The real power of Linux is the Server Market, and that is about the only place where the money is. Trying to displace Windows on the DT will only happen when businesses see a real dollar value to Linux on the DT, and that means software has to be available in categories that Linux really doesn't have right now.

Examples:
Project Management that integrates with MS Project
Graphing applications such as Visio.
Full support for Video, sound and multi media that the average MAC user would like.

Any other productivity software that businesses use must be available for the Linux Platform before any of the management tools will make any difference. No one uses a computer for the OS. Even the die hard Linux fans have to use it for something other than the OS. Productivity has to come from somewhere.

If Linux is truely to displace Windows, superior software products must be available, fully supported and cost competative. Printer Drivers must work and the Internet Browsers must provide full IE functionality.

Until all this happens, Linux will be a bit player on the DT. Linux already owns the mid-range server world, but perhaps the DT is a bit more of a challange than anyone expects.
