Desktop Management - Last Bastion of Proprietary Standards
David,

I don't know how big the 'IT Department' market is for *nix workstation management - but I would guess it isn't huge?

Where is Sun's and Novell's incentive to build a better mousetrap?

The answer might be in the outsourcing market. As business processes on IT standardize, and Web Services gather pace
(see my comment to your Blog:
12/14/2004 Sun's new $1100 thin client: Going once. Going twice...do we have any takers?)
... there will be increased pressure to see them standardize their offerings - both across the platforms managed (i.e. Windows and *nix combined) and between existing management systems.

As this would seem to require a standard, where might that come from? Open NMS, while widely supported, does not appear to have covered Windows to any useful degree...

Time to dust off SNMP, or even revive CMIS/CMIP?

I'm not holding my breath, I can hear the groans of Sun and Novell (and Microsoft, and IBM) marketeers - "Oh woe are we, for we will lose our USP!"
