Watch for this process to continue as one ISV after another joins the club. This is really just the formalization of something that has been commonplace in the industry for years. It is part of a psychological war on Linux that is not likely to produce much of a practical effect.
The frontal attack by SCO was really a best effort on the part of the industry to squelch free software and it is failing. Now they are relegated to potential niche attacks that are not only just as likely to fail, but any that do succeed will simply end up being licensed.
On top of that, it is never going to be cost effective to go after individual or small bussiness users and the corporate players all have thier own armies of lawyers and means of retaliation.
But these agreements do have a plus for Linux. They mean that any software vendor in the group that introduces Linux products will be cross licensed and as such protected from attacks by other members of the group and will be able to bring cutting edge proprietary technology to Linux without facing IP issues. - Posted by: George Mitchell Posted on: 12/16/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
