The missing information is important.
As the article is written, it's impossible to tell what the world of 2008 will look like, either the total numbers or the significant events, like conversions of existing pc's to Linux.
So, without the complete picture, it's impossible to say what's expected to happen year by year. Or how often events such as conversion from Linux to pirated copies of Windows might be. Or how sales will be affected by the actions of governments.
Is IDC, for example, expecting the Chinese government to order that all pc's sold in that country come with the Chinese government's version of Linux, under penalty of law?
Are the purchases by businesses to be pc buys only, or part of complete packages?
What is the anticipated impact of Longhorn's arrival in late 2006?

As written, this article is like my saying world consumption of poultry will decline by 20% in the next 5 years, without explaining that I anticipate a currently unknown virus to arise and kill millions of chickens every year.

If you're considering an easy issue like servers, it's a lot easier to project trends because all the players are already in the market, and their direction has become apparent. Here, though, how and where pc's will be sold has to be guessed, and I'm not sure what these guesses are, let alone what justifies them.
