For me...
I started out via UNIX. Then dual booted Win3.11 and a release (the name of which escapes me right now) that would only run from CD. I went out and bought a copy of Slackware. I ran that for awhile and then discovered the upgrade process was to install the new version, wiping out what was there. So I bought a copy of RedHat 3.0 because it would do an upgrade without trashing my configuration.

Now as to *BSD releases...at the time, as I recall, they were hard to find, expensive, etc. Even now they're a bit more esoteric than the straight forward Linux distros.

Now I'm thinking hard about switching at least one machine over to OpenBSD, yep I'm a nut about security. And Linux is starting to be to much like Windows...point, click. Love my command line.
