- MS Access replacement?
-
"They are all busy evaluating OpenOffice.
No suprise here. And even those that switch because they have already paid, through Licensing 6, are probably evaluating OpenOffice. OpenOffice together with Adobe solutions and other third party / open source solutions are looking better and better every day. It is also a bonus that, starting with OpenOffice 1.1, you can save directly to PDF. Microsoft has very few friends."
I know this thread is a few months old but I'm hoping someone will have a suggestion for me.
I've read my share of "Why are you using MS Office when OpenOffice is just as good and it's free" posts on here, but not one of them has ever said it can also be a drop-in replacement for Access. Word, Excel, and Powerpoint only...
That's a great start, but my company has scores of Access 97 (and a few 2000) databases that are used constantly, and that alone is enough to stop OpenOffice deployment in its tracks. File formats are such a problem between Access versions that we still deploy Access 97 even though the rest of the deployed MS Office suite is 2000.
Unless we do a forklift upgrade of PCs on our next replacement cycle (not likely) I don't see a smooth way of handling this without serious disruption to most of our departments, unless we import them all into SQL? I'm not a DBA so help me out here.
Top of my feature wish list for OpenOffice: a drop-in, fully-compatible Access replacement. They make that happen and I will seriously evaluate OpenOffice for replacing our pricy MS Office licensing. (Don't care about Outlook; we use GroupWise.)
No snide remarks please. You want open source software to take over the world? Help small and mid-size businesses with practical, cost effective solutions to the real problems we have.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. - Posted by: crm_z Posted on: 04/10/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
