For maximum benefit, you should upgrade serrvers too.
Your point is bassackwards. Office 2003 is fine by itself. I'm using it. It is better than Office XP in many ways. We are also using the Sharepoint file services extensions on Windows Server and that makes it even better. It's not rocket science but it's pretty cool. Here's a scenario that I use a lot.

When I have a document that I need feedback on I just go to the Tools menu and select "Shared Workspace." On the right side of the word.doc (in this case - also works for other doc types) a dialog box appears that gives me the opportunity to post the document to my workspace (already created) or create a new workspace. One click on the "Create" button and the document is posted to the site. Then I just add the users who I want to see the document and assign privs to them. Some can view only. Others have full control. Once I hit the submit button, the workspace is craeted and an email is sent out that points peopele to the <ocument. They make their edits and I am notified when they make changes etc.

Like I said, this isn't rocket science - you can do this manually today with Windows XP and a regular old file server or on other platforms. What MS excels in is making this stuff so easy that people actually use it.

So, my point is that your point has it backwards. You get additional benefits by using Office 2003 with Sharepoint or other products from MS or other companies. What's wrong with that? Nothing in my opinion.
