NOT good for consumers ... another vertical monopoly
In the end this is going to mean less choice for consumers as the Apps are going to end up welded to the database, and that choice will end up removed from the consumer. It is going to bring hard times for several major proprietary database vendors who will now be cut off at the final pass. The only good factor is that it will mean another integrated solution competitor for Microsoft and IBM, both of which currently offer vertical solutions. The only total vertical solutions provider until recently was Microsoft, but now with the evolution of Linux, Oracle and IBM will be able to offer top down solutions as well without including Microsoft in the picture.

Competition is good, and the more the better. This move by Oracle will only serve to reduce overall competition.
